Along with five other crew members, E. J. is learning to paddle an outrigger canoe. Outrigger canoes are a rich part of the Polynesian culture. We experienced our first canoe blessing at the beach last weekend. This involved each member of the club bringing a lei to place on a canoe, speakers describing the history and importance of this town, Hawaiian chanting and a blessing with waters from the base of the Ko'olau mountain range. Even though E. J. is too young to appreciate this ceremony, I hope he will understand how lucky he is to have participated in this event.
